Partial & Complete Dentures in Townsville

Fitting Custom-Made Dentures

Complete dentures can be fitted after all teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal. A conventional complete denture is usually fitted 8-12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.

A denture is a removable appliance that's inserted into the mouth to replace natural teeth and provide support for the cheeks and lips, improving aesthetics and function. Dentures are either partial or complete and can be made of plastic or metal.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between partial and complete dentures?

The main difference between partial and complete dentures lies in the number of teeth they replace. Complete dentures, also known as full dentures, are used when all the teeth are missing in the upper or lower jaw or both. Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used when some natural teeth still remain. They fill in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevent other teeth from changing position.

  • What is the process of getting dentures?

The process of getting dentures involves several appointments, usually over a span of several weeks. Initial impressions or moulds of your mouth are taken to create a custom denture model. Several appointments may be necessary to adjust the model for proper shape, colour and fit. Once the final model is approved, the final denture is cast, and adjustments are made as necessary.

  • How long do dentures last?

With proper care, dentures can last between 5-7 years. However, they will need to be relined or remade due to normal wear over time and also because the mouth naturally changes as you age, which can cause the dentures to become loose. Regular dental examinations are important so your dentist can check the underlying tissues for any changes and evaluate the condition of your dentures.

  • How should I care for my dentures?

Just like natural teeth, dentures need daily cleaning to remove food particles and plaque and to help prevent stains and oral infections. Brush your dentures daily with a denture brush or soft toothbrush, using a denture cleaner, mild soap or dishwashing liquid. Regular toothpaste is not recommended as it can be too harsh and scratch the dentures.

When not wearing your dentures, keep them in a safe place covered in water to prevent warping. Avoid hot water as it can warp dentures. Dentures should also be checked annually by your dentist to ensure proper fit and function.
